    Lesson 5: People We’ve Lost

Looking at the title for this week’s writing exercise, it is clear that this topic isn’t meant to be lighthearted. Loss is never an easy thing to reconcile with. Especially in the case that you’re a “glass half full with sunshine” kind of person like myself. Where I would much rather focus on all the small events and pleasures in life that bring a smile to my lips and warmth to my heart when I think about them. Alas, life has many faces. For every blessing it bestows upon us, it also provides moments of loss, pain, hurt and sorrow to compensate. I suppose you could say it provides a…

    Lesson 4: Contribution

The topic of contribution is an interesting one. What exactly can you consider to be contribution? And what kind of contribution are we making to the world? It is easy to underestimate what it is that we contribute. In my opinion, we oftentimes overlook how much impact we have in our lives. Being self-aware, I believe, greatly improves your ability to see the potential impact you may have on the people, situations and the world around you. However, even with self-awareness it can be easy to misjudge what exactly it is we are contributing to that which is around us. Lesson Format This week’s lesson was a pretty short one.…

    Lesson 3: What is Missing?

What is missing? What a question! I’ve re-visited this chapter 3 times already and the answer keeps changing. Naturally this makes this chapter quite a fascinating one for me. Not something I was necessarily anticipating, yet certainly very interesting to venture into.   Lesson Format In and of itself, this lesson was pretty short in the description side, however, pretty long as a whole. It had a short paragraph at the top which asked you to review your life (or lack thereof) in the areas of health, relationships, family, community, work, spirituality, fun, environment, finances, personal growth, etc. Then it gave you a set of questions/prompts to guide your writing…

    Lesson 2: Work

Work. What do you think about when you see, hear or write the word work? I’ve had numerous experiences in the world of work and somehow my opinion keeps changing. Last year work was a serious trauma point in my life. A few years ago work was the highlight of my life. In times of the pandemic, I am grateful I have work in my life, but also realise things could be better. As such, you can imagine this chapter of DailyOM’s “A Year of Writing to Uncover the Authentic Self” course was quite a rich one for me.   Lesson Format The same as for Lesson 1: Roadblocks, this lesson started…

    Lesson 1: Roadblocks

It’s ironic, isn’t it? You look forward to something new. You get all excited. Then suddenly – bam! You can’t make a start. This is exactly how I felt when I started this course. I bought it just a few days into the fresh new year of 2021 and thought – wow, this is going to be amazing! After all. I love writing, I love learning, I love personal development. This course was made for me! It seemed to encompass it all. Yet there I was, sitting in front of the monitor, reading the first lesson and all I could feel was resistance. Roadblocks? What roadblocks? That could apply to…
