This post was inspired after I received a call today that left me literally speechless. A person who means the world to me was told in no few words, by their own flesh and blood no less, that they were a terrible person deserving not a single act of kindness.

This person is not flawless. This person is not perfect and yet this person is a person of immeasurable strength, infinite resilience and who exudes an exceptional loyalty, warmth and kindness only the few who look past the cracks will ever witness.

Experiencing this person’s heartbreaking reaction to a select number of sharp words reminded me of a saying, I’m sure you all will know:

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never harm me.

It’s a simple line, a solid wisdom and yet¬†the truth is words have power.

Every word has a meaning. Every word has a significance. Every word has an association, unless you do not know it.

A single word can mean a million different things to a million different people. Take for example the word LOVE. What does love mean to you? What do you associate it with?

When I think of love I think of many different things. I think of the love I feel for all the individual people in my life, each one of whom I love differently. I think of a romantic thought, a hurtful moment, a never ending source of emotion that inspires action again and again. Love to me can be wonderful or trying, but in the end it is a sweeping singular word that makes me feel alive.

Now think about the word VICIOUS. What does vicious mean to you? What do you associate it with?

When I think of something vicious, I think of something hurt. I think of a reaction. I think of something wild. When I hear the word vicious though, I also immediately question why. Why is something vicious? Why is it not calm? What happened to make things so?

Words have power. Words have meaning. They provoke thoughts, memories, emotions and reactions. Words can make a person’s day, but words can also break a person’s soul if repeatedly abused.

Words are powerful. Please choose them well. Every. Single. Day.
