8 Steps to Feeling at Home in a New Place

Moving or travelling to a new place can be an exciting and fascinating thing. It can also be a scary thing, a confusing thing and a very very unsettling thing. You don’t know the new neighbourhood, you won’t know anybody living around you, the lights may be brighter, the noise may be louder (or quieter!), you may not speak the local language and goodness gracious, where on earth has the shower gone?! Oh wait, there it is ~ in the form of two hose pipes attachable to the taps…

Needless to say, a few adjustments may need to be made before you can really call a place home, but here are a few things that may just help to speed up that process just a tad.

1. Clean and organise your new place

While researching for this article, a friend of mine Karam said that the first thing she does to feel at home in a new place is to clean and organise her new apartment. Having moved a lot, I tend to agree. There’s just something about a freshly cleaned house and knowing where everything is in it that really makes it feel like home.

2. Put up something familiar

Obviously your new home will never be like your old one, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t make it feel like home with a few small touches. My friend Yasmin said she likes to buy a flower and place it in a vase and put up a pinboard of pictures with family and friends. I thought those were great ideas!

3. Keep your old pillow close at hand

“A pillow?” you may ask. Yes, you did in fact read that right, it does say pillow. I once read somewhere that taking your own pillow with you when you travel promotes good sleep in new places. I tried it out about 6 years ago, found it worked and haven’t stopped doing it ever since! Sleep is important to lower stress, so why not see if it works for you too? 🙂

4. Find your nearest grocery store

Food and drink, by virtue of the fact they allow us to stay alive, are non-negotiable necessities which you will need to find sooner rather than later. Finding your local grocery shop, therefore, is a great way of gaining a sense of security by knowing that you can find what you need, when you need it. Supermarket information counters and notice boards are also great places to find out what’s going on in the community around you!

5. Find new people 

Meetup.com and Couchsurfing.org are two sites I never neglect to use when landing in a new place. These communities are usually very active in many regions and a great way of meeting new people of all ages. Others I have spoken to, have also recommended dating sites such as OKCupid.com to make new friends too…intriguing!

6. Explore the shortest way to work/school/town

The likelihood is that you moved for a reason, so whatever that reason was you should aim to find your way to it asap. Commuting can be stressful if you don’t know where to go, so finding the most efficient way to get there before you have to be there can often help a lot in subduing first day nerves.

7. Check out your new neighbourhood

Do you have any hobbies you like to pursue? Then check if they have them around your area. Do you enjoy reading in the park? See if there is one close by. Are you a foodie who loves restaurants? Explore what culinary delights your new area might have to offer. The key to successful relocation is getting your routine back, so go out and get your life moving again!

8. Put your feet up and relax

Finally, moving can often be a stressful ordeal so one of the best ways to not lose your head is to just take the time to relax. Watch a movie, call home, open a bottle of wine, work out at the gym… whatever makes you turn off that overactive brain of yours – do it. Your to-do list will still be there in the morning and it’ll seem ten times more manageable once you’ve taken the time to just switch off and enjoy being the old you for a minute!
